Creatives to Watch in ‘22: Emily Núñez

In 2021, visual artist Emily Núñez became a great example of “give me the space and watch what I do with it” (we replaced “ball” with “space” but you get it, right?).
In the fourth quarter of 2021, Charlotte Is Creative and McColl Center awarded her a four-month micro-residency in the Center’s new studios — a dream of hers. This gave her the space to create, giving us a window into her Dominican culture.
For Emily, it’s all about connectivity — connecting with her art, connecting her art to her culture and connecting us to her art (Charlotte creatives are all about togetherness). The space in McColl Center helped her do all three. The studio and the community around it meant so much to her that she’s decided to stay at McColl past her four-months and rent a studio space of her own.
HER ONGOING WORK
The idea of witnessing to and sharing this theme of connection in her ongoing body of work “Evidence of my History” is exciting. As viewers, we get to experience elements and symbols expressed through a collection of portraits and mixed media that relate to her childhood memories. It invites us to know her and her heritage.
JUST THE BEGINNING
A Charlotte native who recently graduated from Appalachian State University, Emily may be at the beginning of her creative career in Charlotte, but we think she’s well ahead of the game.
With the love she has for her Dominican roots, her passion for local arts and her desire to connect with (and work in tandem with) fellow creators, she’s sure to have enough fuel to propel her towards the moon. If all else fails, she’ll land among stars (thank you Les Brown).
