400 Rubik’s Cubes Unleash Infinite Creativity
Just before the end of 2019, Jordan Pham, a 14-year-old Charlottean, asked his parents for several hundred Rubik’s in order to create pixel mosaic portraits like those he’d found online. (It’s a story in and of itself — say Jordan’s folks — finding and shipping hundreds of Rubik’s Cubes.)
Before you ask, let us say: No. It does not involve removing the stickers and arranging the way you need them. It’s a meticulous process of working off a pattern, manipulating 400 individual cubes and assembling them into the final work of 20 rows of 20 columns of cubes.

If you’re watching The Outsider on HBO, you know there are very few moments of comfort. So, it felt like a reprieve to see a familiar face pop up as a reporter at the beginning of the second episode — Laura Palka, host of the “The Daily Two” on WSOC/WAXN-TV. What would you do if you were suddenly stuck with 500 pounds of peanuts?
If it were 1913, you might take them home, roast them and sell them for a nickel a bag… and that’s exactly what food broker Philip L. Lance did when one of his clients decided to not accept their large Virginia peanut order. Overnight, a snack food titan was created on South Boulevard here in Charlotte. The Lance Packing Co. was founded by Lance and his son-in-law Salem Van Every. They achieved a nice level of success as their innovative single-serve packages became popular among those looking for a quick snack to carry on the go.
Lance eventually added peanut butter to the business. In 1916, his wife Nancy and daughter Mary started spreading the peanut butter on crackers and created the first commercially sold peanut butter cracker sandwich. The cracker sandwiches were enjoyed by soldiers stationed at Camp Greene during World War I. This helped spread the popularity of “America’s Favorite Sandwich Crackers.” Each Lance cracker has over 100 years of Charlotte history baked into each bite … and we think that’s delicious!
