Uptown Flea’s Taking a Siesta, but Wait … There’s More!

If you’ve read The Biscuit for any length of time, it’s pretty obvious … we love all things Jordan Dollard. So, we were a little saddened to read that Uptown Flea is taking a break. The official statement is:
After an incredible year of Uptown Flea, we’ve decided to put Uptown Flea to rest for a while, to focus on other shopping experiences throughout Charlotte. This means bye for now, but not necessarily forever. Please continue to follow along on our social channels as we highlight vendors we love and moments from past Uptown Fleas. You never know, we may be back for all your treasure hunting needs!
That said, Ms. Dollard ain’t going anywhere. She’s still making local retail magic with Front Porch Sundays, South End Small Business Saturday and Poptopia (for your holiday shopping pleasure). You can call it favoritism, but we know Jordan always has something up her well-designed and tastefully elegant sleeve, so we’ll keep pressing her until we can tell you more about what’s next.

We’re Off to See The Wonderful Wizard of Charlotte

Toto, we have a feeling we’re not in Charlotte anymore. Or at least it feels that way as characters from the Land of Oz keep appearing in the streets of Crown Town. We were lucky to get a peek behind the curtain of the Queen City and talk to the wizard himself, a street artist appropriately named OZ.
Take a walk down the Yellow Brick Road with OZ as he discusses Charlotte’s art scene, why the Wizard of Oz is his source of inspiration and how and why he does what he does.
There’s no place like The Biscuit. There’s no place like The Biscuit. Read our interview with OZ here.

Let’s throwback to the September 6th CreativeMornings/Charlotte event, where an audience of more than 350 Daybreak Legends gathered at Project 658 in East Charlotte to hear John Tosco and his band of misfit music-makers deliver a beautiful blend of storytelling and song.
Thanks to Charlotte Star Room, you can now feast your eyes & ears on his full talk, and by the end, you’ll understand more about Tosco Music and why a mutual lovefest has been brewing between John and the Queen City for decades.
Enjoy photos of the event from Joshua Galloway, The Creative Gent.
Tickets for the next CreativeMornings/Charlotte with Taiwo Jaiyeoba go live at 9 a.m. Monday, October 7.

#TBGFW19: ASATA – October 6
For the second year, #TeamBlkGrlFly is holding the “A Seat At The Table Awards” to celebrate black women all across Charlotte who are making an impact at the grassroots, local level. We’d come up with our own description but there’s no way we can do better than the official description: “An awards program for the dope (AF), professional, creative, unapologetic, sincere, authentic, sexually free black woman with juice!”
ASATA is at Camp North End on Sunday, October 6 from 2-5pm. The event is in collaboration with Bea N’ Bev and being hosted by #CLTAvenger and all around #OHMAZING person, Ohavia Phillips. For more information and tickets, click here.
Every week, there are more and more interesting events popping up around the Queen City. These are just a few that got us excited for lots of different reasons.
We are always grateful to spend an evening honoring amazing Charlotteans.

Little Creatives Need Help Too

As we all know, literacy is incredibly important and reaching critical reading milestones at a young age helps set our little ones up for success in the future. Y Readers Plus is a new pilot project of the YMCA’s nationally recognized literacy program that serves students in grades K-3 who are reading below grade level. The pilot project is taking place for the duration of the school year at Huntingtowne Farms Elementary and they need volunteers!
We know the school year has already started but it’s never too late to lend a helping hand. Volunteers will read with the same assigned student each week for 45 minutes. That’s a small commitment that can have a HUGE impact. If you’re interested in volunteering or want more information, send an email to louise.sullivan@ymcacharlotte.org .

Like you, we turn to our media friends to help us look beyond the creative community. They tell great stories we’re happy to share, but sometimes we’re left wondering if there isn’t another story just waiting underneath.

KAPOW! There’s gonna be a catfight! This Sunday, it’s the Battle of the 1995 Expansion Teams as the Carolina Panthers pounce on the Jacksonville Jaguars for the 7th time in franchise history. The Panthers and Jags are currently tied 3-3 in the series, and we believe this #GameTimeGraphic by Charlotte artist Nalee Thao, AKA Narly, will give the Cardiac Cats the extra boost they need to tip the scales in Carolina’s favor.
We will feature a new Panthers graphic from a local artist every week this season. Please feel free to share and use this on social media and tag @CLTisCreative and @narly.
