Murals Bring the Community Together on Beatties Ford Image via Ricky Singh For the past 4-5 years, Ricky Singh, an artist and an educator at Charlotte Lab School, has wanted to paint a mural on Beatties Ford Road. This past weekend, in the wake of last Monday’s tragic events, he saw it was time to act. With help from Niki’s Food Shop, its landlord and more than 50 artists and community members who gathered, that mural went up on Saturday. But things aren’t stopping there. Singh, in partnership with a number of community organizations, is working toward a larger roll-out of work in July with cooperation from Beatties Ford Road landlords and the City of Charlotte to beautify Beatties Ford while also creating an ecosystem where money recycles in the community. Learn more about Saturday’s mural, the plan going forward and how you can be involved, here. And click the button below to see a photo gallery of Saturday captured by Andy Goh.

There’s a pretty big holiday happening this week … National Gingersnap Day! It’s no secret that we at The Biscuit love random holidays (and eating) and after being inspired by an extra ginger-snappy piece of art last week, we decided that we must celebrate this one. Plus, it’s on July 1 and we want to start our month off right. We turned to resident Biscuit staff baker, Melissa Dorsch, to share a gingersnap recipe that is, in her words, a snap. Plus, she included a recipe for a cocktail called The Gingersnap that we may or may not have a few of on the Fourth. Snap into a dozen (or three) freshly baked gingersnaps.

We would say that this mural has us howling in delight every time we see it, but in all honestly, we usually just stand there in stunned silence in awe of its beauty and detail. This piece by Matt Hooker and Matt Moore, also known around the Charlotte art scene as “The Matts,” was created as a part of the 2019 Talking Walls Festival. Next time you’re in Uptown near the Hal Marshall Building, do yourself a favor and see their mural “Clarity” in person. It’s worth it. Directions: 700 North Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC 28202 This Queen City exploration was powered by OrthoCarolina.
