  3. HUGumentary: Irisol is Coloring the Queen City

You know visual artist Irisol Gonzalez. At least, you know her work. You’ve enjoyed her murals across Charlotte, viewed her pieces at C3Lab or zooming by a ArtPop Street Gallery billboard featuring her work. But, you may not know the story of her 8-foot self-portrait she made using hundreds and hundreds of colored pencils. A HUG Micro-Grant helped her get the supplies she needed to do it and she told that story, and more, on QC@3 on WBTV. Watch her HUGumentary here.

Of the HUG, Irisol says, “Making the the HUG granted piece meant a commitment to my craft and the people of Charlotte who could relate to it. It became a voice for more than myself. ”

The self-protrait may be complete, but Irisol’s not one to rest on her laurels, Irisol has an array of new projects on the horizon. “I am working on a series about sexism in Latin American culture. The series hopes to educate and question our belief system,” she sats.

Irisol is also collaborating with another HUG recipient (or HUGgee), the Cine Casual film series at Camp North End in March.

Matt Olin and Tim Miner also joined Kristen Miranda to talk about Irisol and her work. Watch the interview.
