Come for the Murals, Stay for the Moonshine (Fruitcake) at Manolo’s

Manolo’s Bakery at 4405 Central Avenue has become a well-known destination for incredible treats and community activism. Now, when you think of them, owner Manolo Betancur wants you to think of moonshine … moonshine fruit cake, to be specific.

Manolo based his new creation on his mother’s wine fruit cake. After experimenting for eight months, Manolo recently unveiled his newest cake, made with local moonshine, figs and plums;  cherries; peaches; raisins; pineapple; bananas; and “a few more secrets.” It sells for $5 a slice and $45 for a full cake.

Manolo will be sampling the cake this Saturday, Oct. 24 as artist Irisol Gonzalez paints a mural on the window of his bakery in support of the #CountOnMeCLT movement, which encourages the community to fight the spread of COVID-19 by wearing masks, washing hands and social distancing. Irisol will be joined by @CLTChalkArt, who will create a companion piece to Irisol’s on the sidewalk.
