  3. Equal Time: 5 Mesmerizing Minutes from Harvi Panchal

OrthoCarolina has rolled out an online system designed to help you make an appointment in minutes. Five minutes, to be exact.

That got us wondering. What could Charlotte creatives make in five minutes? Well, it turns out that when mixed media artist Harvi Panchal picks up a paintbrush, she can create an intricate design in less than five minutes.

With experience as a software test engineer, Panchal wields science in one hand … and art in the other. She was born in India and moved to Charlotte about a year and a half ago with her husband. Now, she’s a full-time artist.

After watching videos of Panchal painting intricate designs on coasters, we reached out. Normally, the coasters take 30 minutes each from start to finish.

We asked Panchal what she could do in five minutes … we were completely hypnotized by her process. Watch it in time-lapse and full speed.

Harvi Panchal’s Passion to Create

While she says she’s never considered herself an “artist,” Panchal always had an affinity for the arts.

She started painting as a relaxation strategy to help relieve stress from work as a software test engineer. But, she wasn’t able to truly devote herself to it until she and her husband moved to the United States.

“What really inspired me to become an artist.” she said, “was the beauty of the natural world, the fascinating variety of shapes, shades and colors and the joy I feel when  working on something that will end up being much more than the sum of individual parts.”

The Soothing Symmetry of Mandala

For her coasters, Panchal draws inspiration from Mandala design.

“The symmetry of it is soothing to me,” she said. “When I started, it came naturally to me. I tried it on old wine bottles, jars, jar lids, incense holders, stones, trinket dishes and coasters.”

Panchal’s also branching into new areas that further blend her experience with software and artistic design.

“Digital art is leading to an explosion of creativity, which is opening the doors for more people to become interested and involved in the art world,” she said. “I’m  a person who loves experimenting with different mediums and techniques.”
