SHOUTing Match: Caroline Calouche with Courtney Lynn & Quinn
- /
To help keep up Charlotte’s spirits during the COVID-19 and prepare for annual Charlotte SHOUT! events this fall, we’ve asked Queen City creatives to team up for SHOUTing Matches — short, shareable creative mash-ups.
Caroline Calouche is known across the Queen City for her cirque and aerial and contemporary dance company and school, Caroline Calouche & Co. But, in COVID-19 time, her large scale productions have been on hold.
So, we asked her to find a new creative to team-up with for a SHOUTing Match. And, she did just that.
Working with local musicians Courtney Lynn & Quinn, Caroline made “Self,” a short film featuring a contemporary dance routine along with original music. This is their first collaboration. We hope it won’t be their last.

About the Project
“When quarantine started, I switched my ChoreoLab class (which was a studio class) to virtual. When I saw the Shout out for collaborative films from Charlotte is Creative, I immediately reached out to (Courtney Lynn & Quinn) about creating a sound score for the film. They jumped at the chance to be creative even in a genre of art that is completely new to them. It was completely new to me too, so it was great collaborating with someone else who was up for the challenge,” Caroline says.
“I gave [Courtney Lynn & Quinn] a film that was silent and had no clue if all the movement and the film segments actually had a steady beat,” said Caroline. “In 36 hours, they sent me a track. I listened first and was so shocked that it started with a steady drum beat! ‘What?! There is a beat? No way! I guess after all these years of dancing, I actually have some natural rhythm!'”
