If you’re reading this, you’re likely well acquainted with the belief that history is doomed to repeat itself. But, do you really believe it? Does the Charlotte of, say 100 years ago, really have any bearing on the Charlotte of today? Yeah, it kinda’ does.

There are lessons to be learned and heeded as we move forward. At The Biscuit, we’re unabashed nerds about the Queen City. From Queen City Quiz Show to CreativeMornings/Charlotte, we want to dive deep and explore every corner of life here. And, every once in a while, we stroll back through the pages of history. The pages of the old Charlotte News, to be specific.

So, here are some of the headlines from June 18 … 1919.

What were they talking about? Well, a lot of the things, rightly or wrongly, we’re still talking about. Among the news — Uptown street repairs, safety concerns in El Paso, Texas about the activities of Pancho Villa and a building boom that looked like it had no end in sight.

Our favorite quote comes from a bonus story from June 19, 1919 — “As I see it, there is no likelihood that good offices will ever have to stand vacant in Charlotte.” Let’s hope so, especially if there’s enough variety to be affordable for everyone.

What do you think? If we told you these were today’s headlines, would you have known the difference? Click on the thumbnails below to see the entire story. Maybe the answers to our current challenges are contained within.
