Equal Time: @Sree_Henna Makes 5-Minute Mehndi
- /
What can you create in five minutes?
To help save their patients time, OrthoCarolina has launched an online system to make appointments in five minutes flat, and they asked us to challenge creatives across the Queen City to make something amazing in the same amount of time.
From jazz to chalk art and painting, the first six creatives have blown our minds. (See what they made here.)
But, Sreedivya – a.k.a. @Sree_Henna – may just take the cake. She practices the art of mehndi or henna, which is thousands of years old. And, the delicate, intricate designs she can create on a living canvas (hand, arm, foot) with a small pouch of henna ink are a sight to behold. See for yourself. Watch the video here.
A World of Inspiration
Sreedivya has been practicing henna since childhood and was inspired by everyone around her. Her mother taught her henna, rangoli (creating patterns on the floor with powers, flowers, rocks, etc.), stitching and cooking. Her father shared origami with her. A friend taught her quilting. She also learns by watching artists on Instagram.
She first did mehndi for the public at the Open Streets 704 celebration a few years ago and has worked in tandem with local nonprofits.
As amazing as her henna creations are, Sreedivya’s true passions are drawing with pencils and quilling, art created when the artist folds and rolls strips of paper to create decorative designs. You can see her quilling work here.
See the links below to follow her and see what inspires Sreedivya. For her, inspiration is everywhere.
“There is a big creative community in Charlotte,” says Sreedivya. “I am happy to be one of them.”
