Have you ever had to drive a giant bunny sculpture from Wilmington to Charlotte and back again? Charlotte creative Rupam Varma has. She was recently selected as one of 10 artists to paint a 4 1/2 foot tall fiberglass rabbit for the “Hoppy Times” installation at Airlie Gardens in Wilmington, N.C. The bunnies will be on display through Dec. 31.
In April, Rupam was one of the local artists tapped to design one of the “Easter Eggs on Parade” installations at Charlotte SHOUT! She landed the commission for “Hoppy Times” immediately after SHOUT!
What was it like transporting the bunny?
This required two trips to Airlie Gardens at Wilmington, N.C – one to pick up the structure and then another to drop off the finished piece of art in my minivan.
How long did you work on it?
This took 40 to 45 hours over a period of two months.
What was your inspiration for the design?
The design was inspired by Mithila art (a.k.a. Madhubani art). This is an Indian folk art tradition. I am a professionally certified Mithila artist. The art involves freehand drawing of intricate patterns and motifs drawn from flora and fauna. The bright colors make the creations stand out.
