SHOUTing! Match: We Can Work It Out
- /
To help keep up Charlotte’s spirits during the COVID-19 and prepare for annual Charlotte SHOUT! events this fall, we’ve asked Queen City creatives to team up for SHOUTing Matches — short, shareable creative mash-ups.
On the same day that Charlotte artists were painting a Black Lives Matter street mural on the 200 block of South Tryon Street on three days’ notice, a group of eight musicians, organized by Gillian Zambor, gathered on two day’s notice to record a cover of The Beatles’ classic tune, “We Can Work It Out.” Many of the musicians had never met before they played together — a testament to how creativity can build instant connections. Gillian Zambor is a music therapist (originally from Scotland) who’s currently living and working in Charlotte. Like so many of us, she’s trying to figure out a way to express her feelings and seed healing and love amidst so much chaos and turmoil. And, like many of us, she’s using her creative abilities and her creative community to do so.
She pulled together a team of eight local musicians to record this iconic song in an effort to “spread some love and also send a message of hope and positivity of what can happen if we all work together in this marathon for change.”
The group, which met and recorded at a friend’s house had a goal — “Bringing the community together through music to help spread a little love and with the hope the message of this song can reach those who need to hear it most.”
Like any good creative, Zambor put her own spin on the song, altering a few lyrics to hit the group’s personality and to reflect the times. Of the experience, she says, “It was truly amazing to see everyone with such positive vibes bonding and having a great time playing together. Imagine how much of a better world we could have if we all worked together in harmony🤗.”
