Can Super Secret Nail Salons Lead You to Love?

There’s a “Super Secret” nail salon in Charlotte. Kellee Stall knows where it is. And, she’ll tell you if you ask nicely. We’re going to resist the urge to make puns to “Charlotte’s Web” today, but Charlotte’s creative community is a place where — if you’re willing to get caught up in it — connections are made and new friendships formed. Whether you’ve been in the Queen City for decades or weeks, you can get in deep quickly. And, that’s a good thing. Case in point — Kellee hasn’t been in Charlotte long, but she’s not afraid to see where open eyes and an open mind take her. This week, a chance encounter with an old friend led her to a “Super Secret” salon.

Hope you brought a hearty appetite — this week’s batch of The Biscuit Podcast is bursting with flavor. Matt interviews Charlotte “art-ivist” Rosalia Torres-Weiner (4:30) about driving across Charlotte in her art truck, her passion to use arts to create change and puppets making her cry. Tim raps with Meredith Dean (32:00) about why now is the right time in Charlotte for EmpowerCon on Sept. 28. Nikki Eason drops an inspiring “Mogul Moment” on us (44:55) and we ask Charlotteans “Who’s your Muse?” (47:26) Plus, you might win coffee with Matt & Tim. (You can decide on your own if that’s a prize.) The Biscuit Podcast is made possible by OrthoCarolina, Crescent Communities & Four Eyes Productions. It’s a member of the Queen City Podcast Network.

Friday, September 13 is National Fortune Cookie Day. We’ll save the debate on whether or not this should be a bank holiday where we can eat take-out and debate the origins of these cookies for later. Today, we’re wondering, “What wisdom awaits the Queen City inside our fortune cookie?”

This past weekend saw the inaugural World Lit Street Food Festival at Camp North End. And, while we can’t “Willy Wonka” your phone to share the actual tastes and aromas of this event, we can share delicious photos from our pals (and #CLTAvengers) Kriska and Manny of @CLT.Remedy.

With a not-so-special Special Election Tuesday and an “unconventional” voting session in Raleigh yesterday, it’s been a week in North Carolina politics. It reminds us of a story Page Leggett told us about her hunt for the Michelle Obama portrait in D.C. Page recently returned to our nation’s capital, where she lived in the 90s. She found it very different. But, she’s holding out hope it can be saved by civility … and kind security guards.

There’s a lot to share across the Charlotte area and only so many Biscuit makers in our kitchen. To help us look beyond the creative community, we turn to our media friends. They tell great stories we’re happy to share, but sometimes we’re left wondering if there isn’t another story just waiting underneath. More complaints come concerning shady refrigerator repairman (Fox 46, Frances) Wearing a belt that held up his pants wasn’t one of them Don’t be scared, but a rare ‘micro’ Harvest Moon will appear on Friday the 13th (The Charlotte Observer, Fowler) Silver bullet sales skyrocket in anticipation of “Were-Puppies” invasion Presidential hopeful Tom Steyer spoke to a small crowd of supporters in Rock Hill (The Herald, Kimbrell) Much larger crowd still wondering “who that guy was”

Shiver me timbers and hoist the mainsails! Tonight, Captain Panth-ARRRRRR and his crew of Cardiac Cats take on the Buccaneers of Tampa Bay in the Uptown Ocean. We asked Brett Toukatly (@b_twokat) to help us hoist our own Jolly Roger and take to the seas for Week Two of “Game Day Graphics.” Each week this season, a Charlotte artist create an original image we can rally around. P.S. Our friends at Fox 46 asked us to remind you — before you set sail for game time, you may need to rescan your TV to watch the Panthers game tonight. The Biscuit is proudly sponsored by: | |
